At the end of 2023, I decided to draw on paper every day for the entirety of 2024. I knew what a huge challenge this would be, not only due to the commitment but also because I am so out of practice with drawing on paper. I’ve become so comfortable with digital art that I’ve slightly neglected the more traditional way of creating. So this is me returning to the basics.
I am sharing every drawing here in a weekly summary.
Day 1- the view from my window with my morning coffee. I’m not discriminating in this challenge, I will draw anything. The further from my usual style the better.
Day 2- a plant in my favourite local coffee shop.
Day 3- a sketch from memory of the view from the chairlift that day. This was WAY out of my comfort zone, both the subject and drawing without any reference.
Day 4- a diner that we popped into to warm up. The colour is watercolour but my recycled paper didn’t like it at all. Mental note to buy some wax crayons to try for next week.
Day 5- my partner in his element. Gosh I love him.
Day 6- drawing from imagination. I had a tired mind and just started doodling. Flowers have always been what come out of my pen when I’m not thinking too much.
Day 7- mixing it up with a portrait. For the face I used a reference photo loosely and then let my imagination do the rest. I miss portraiture. I will do more of it.
So that’s it for the week! So excited to be doing this. I have every intention of keeping it up, as much as life allows, and documenting it along the way. I invite you to join me too - drawing every day is a wonderful exercise. I am using it similarly to how I use journaling; not coming with too much of an expectation but just putting something on paper and then seeing what it tells me.
Thank you for being here,
Tarn xx
